New York

Office Profile

When an 80 year-old firm with almost 550 lawyers opens a new office in the most vibrant city in the world, you're going to get the best of all worlds.

In September 2004, Sheppard Mullin brought its strong and diverse foundation to New York City, opening what is now a 47-lawyer office in Rockefeller Center.  The office began with a core litigation group and has grown into a vibrant part of the firm.  Today, Sheppard Mullin's New York office has partners practicing in virtually every one of the firm's traditional areas of expertise.

The lawyers in the New York office have practices that include sophisticated commercial litigation, intellectual property, antitrust, entertainment and media, corporate, tax, banking and financial restructuring, and labor and employment law. The co-chair of our Labor & Employment practice is resident in our NY office. The firm has devoted substantial resources to identifying and cultivating creative, problem-solving attorneys and entrepreneurial individuals who are interested in building the office as a key element in the growth of the firm.  This approach applies to every lawyer from the junior-most associate to the senior-most partner.

Sheppard Mullin prides itself on its independence from the strictures under which many of its New York competitors operate.  The firm culture is based on excellence and transparency.  Perhaps most important, the firm is a welcoming place to make a career.  For example, in New York, mentors are the key to maximizing each summer associate’s opportunities.  The New York office was named a "Best Places to Work" by Crains New York Business in 2010.  From the moment you walk through the door, you can expect to find people who know who you are, working alongside you to introduce you to the firm, its people and the practice of law.  All summer associates are assigned not one, but two mentors, a partner and an associate.  We have divided the summer associate universe into two components, and we assign a mentor to guide you within each of those worlds.  One of your mentors is a member of the New York recruiting committee.  That person is responsible for helping you take advantage of all aspects of the summer program.  The other is a practice mentor, who is responsible for teaching you everything you need to know to transition from law student to lawyer.  They are here to help you.  We want to make sure that you have all the resources you need to succeed.
