Pro Bono

Sheppard Mullin attorneys in the San Diego Office have opportunities to do pro bono work in both litigation and transactional matters.  Indeed, the San Diego office has traditionally been one of the most active pro bono offices in the firm.  The San Diego office has been awarded the Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year Award from the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer ("SDVLP") program five times in the last 15 years.

  • A partner received the San Diego Bar Association's 1996 Community Service Award, the SDVLP 1997 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award, and the 1997 State Bar of California's Pro Bono Service Award for District Nine.
  • Partner Ed Vogel is a Past President of the SDVLP.  Partner Jim Mittermiller is a Past President of the Legal Aid Society of San Diego.  Both partners remain on the boards of these two prestigious pro bono referral programs, which provide innumerable opportunities for pro bono work in the areas of domestic violence, AIDS discrimination, housing issues, immigration and asylum, and much more.
  • Many lawyers in San Diego volunteer to participate in the Women's Resource Fair, an annual event providing legal, employment, housing, and other assistance to indigent women.  Special Counsel Karin Dougan Vogel has co-chaired the event for a number of years and received the 2006 Lawyer's Club Community Service Award for her work, (past chairs of the event include Sheppard Mullin Special Counsel Betty Santohigashi).

Collectively, Sheppard Mullin's San Diego lawyers volunteer thousands of pro bono hours each year in matters spanning the entire spectrum of indigent legal and non-legal assistance, as well as in various litigation and transactional matters supporting non-profit organizations.
