The Century City office is seeking a mid-level associate for its healthcare practice.  The practice focus is healthcare regulatory and transactional (contracting, structuring, compliance, acquisitions, financings, joint ventures, investigations, entity formation).  We prefer an attorney from a large firm or a healthcare boutique with 3-5 years of experience in this area.  Corporate experience is a significant plus.  Candidate should have high grades from a nationally ranked law school.

Practice Areas (not all are required) in which experience is desired:

1.  Fraud and abuse analysis and compliance (Stark, antikickback);
2.  Managed care and provider contracting;
3.  Health care acquisitions and financings;
4.  HIPAA and privacy laws;
5.  Hospital operations, licensure and joint commission compliance;
6.  Reimbursement;
7.  Medicare Advantage plans and Knox-Keene (HMO) licensure;
8.  Healthcare information technology;
9.  Corporate practice of medicine structuring and compliance;
10.  Ambulatory surgery centers and outpatient treatment centers.

Analytic Skills:  A good candidate will have excellent research skills, an attention to detail and a strong interest in healthcare as a business.  A general understanding of the healthcare regulatory and reimbursement system is important.  The ability to read and understand financial statements is important and, if not present, will be the subject of training.  Candidate must have had experience drafting and analyzing contracts.

Current Practice Description:  Sheppard Mullin represents a number of active participants in the healthcare industry, including: purchasers of hospitals; private equity funds in their acquisitions of health care companies; nationally expanding provider entities that operate outpatient treatment centers, physician groups or networks, and disease state management programs; local physician groups and IPAs; healthcare information technology companies; and ancillary service providers.  The firm works in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors of the healthcare industry, often doing transactions which are at the intersection of such sectors.  Our transactions occur in many states and occasionally in foreign countries; we often coordinate with local counsel, which will be part of the responsibilities of the associate.

Client Contact:  We expect the associate to have significant daily client contact and responsibility.  In addition to working with clients and transaction parties, the associate also will have interactions with and exposure to private equity funds, venture capital investors, strategic investors, investment bankers, health care accountants and consultants, and other professionals.  Networking is expected and the associate's efforts will be supported by the senior lawyers in the practice.

Regulatory Updating: In addition to billable work, we will expect the associate to monitor several websites on a daily or weekly basis so as to stay current with regulatory developments.  These regulatory developments could lead to opportunities for presentations to clients and trade associations, articles, client alerts and training programs.
